A friendly family owned restaurant and public house, The Hero of Aliwal is named after Whittlesey's most famous son, Sir Harry Smith. In an idyllic location close to the river, The Hero of Aliwal is located in quiet surroundings, very popular with anglers and contractors. An excellent selection of real ales, changed on a weekly basis. Oakhams Ales, Adnams, Broadside and Summer Lightening to name but a few. Our restaurant provides warm,comfortable surroundings,with a great selection of food to choice from. The modern-day city of Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, hides a wealth of history just waiting to be uncovered. Visit Flag Fen Bronze Age Centre where archaeologists found the oldest wheel in Britain. Then fast forward a few centuries to discover the new 12th century cathedral with the largest surviving example of a painted wooden ceiling from the Middle Ages. Peterborough Museum is the city's most haunted building - you can join in a ghost tour if you dare! They also have one of the best collections of marine monsters in the world. Why not take a trip on one of the steam engines at Nene Valley Railway and feel yourself transported to a bygone age.
